Relocate or Retire in the Dominican Republic

You cannot do better than conduct business, relocate or retire in the Dominican Republic:  This is not an exaggeration.

mountains dominican republic 300x218 Relocate or Retire in the Dominican RepublicIt is a fast flight from major United States and Canadian cities—two to four hours.

It has a salubrious, all-year, tropical climate with cool mountains and warm, breezy sea shores. And land and housing are inexpensive compared to the continent.

punta cana beach dominican republic 2519058047 cb36a3475f 300x199 Relocate or Retire in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has a very friendly government for accepting live-in foreigners. It is aware that new people bring not only new capital to the country, but they bring new ideas and employment, whether it be business or philanthropy, or both.

Take, for instance, Chuck and Candy Ritzen from the United States who opened the tourist attraction Monkey Jungle and Zip Line Adventures in Sosua on the north coast. “In our case, we originally came as philanthropic tourists bringing medical supplies to help the poor each time we flew in to visit,” says Chuck.

Since then, they created a tourist attraction monkey jungle Relocate or Retire in the Dominican Republicfrom which all its profits go to the on-site, free medical and dental clinic and pharmacy for the poor.

For the government, people like the Ritzens make ideal residents. They not only open a business but they help the poor in the process.

Or you can live the vacation life in retirement by not having official residency or having official residency. But there are very definite advantages to having residency. For instance, if you are interested in not paying taxes on income derived from outside of your home country, you have to obtain residency.

Residency approval takes about 45 days to get. This is what you will need:

  • 1. Original birth certificate
  • 2. Original police report from country of origin
  • 3. Original marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • 4. Medical exam, and
  • 5. Medical insurance from a Dominican Republic government-approved,            insurance company.

A legal resident can work and do business legally, not so with a non-resident. A legal residency card real estate Relocate or Retire in the Dominican Republicresident can bring in household items tax free, including cars. Otherwise, you have to pay customs duties.

The best way to ship in your belongings is to hire a local customs clearance agent.  They charge about US$300. These guys save you three important things: time, money and heartache. So you wanna do it. Consider giving him extra money to tip the customs agents for doing a swell job. You want to be remembered favorably.

When it comes time for inheritances, a nonresident beneficiary must pay a 50% surcharge on applicable estate taxes, not so with residents.

Furthermore, the first real estate purchase is exempt from transfer taxes, you get a 50% reduction on taxes on mortgages, property tax and all capital gains. Plus residents are exempt from taxes on dividends and interest. Mucho good deal.

All the major population centers are flooded with Internet access at the beaches, restaurants and bars. The Dominican Republic has  9,956,648 people of which  8.63 million (2009) have cell phones, so nation-wide coverage is complete.Hundreds of cable stations are available. Imported groceries are sold in local stores such as Janet’s in Cabarete, Playero in Sosua and PriceSmart in Santiago.

Medical Tourism in the Dominican Republic

medical tourism Dominican Republic 12 30 2011 blog 300x187 Medical Tourism in the Dominican Republic

It used to be people took trips to the Dominican Republic to vacation in its all-year balmy weather, along palm-fringed beaches, under warm, clear blue skies next to warm, clear blue water. Throw in a hammock, a piña colada and a lazy afternoon and you have the perfect Caribbean destination.

But these days there is another reason to go—health and beauty.

Affordable
With the high price of medical and dental treatment in the United States, Canada and Europe, people come here for quality services in elective surgery, plastic surgery, heart surgery, cardiology, eye surgery, cancer treatment, orthopedic work, fertility treatment, wellness and spa, anti-aging, weight loss and dental work of all kinds including cosmetic treatment and implants.

With the current advancement in minimal-intrusion, facial plastic surgery, which is accomplished with laser accuracy, a politician, for instance, can come down here for a 10-day trip, get surgery, relax and do some work as well. When the surgery is in a series of visits over a few years as we get older, it can be minimally done and minimally noticed, but when finished, can create results making a person look 15 years younger and even more attractive. Perhaps more attractive then when a student at Yale. While here, why not throw in lipo-suction to rid the body of that motion-limiting fat around the mid section, all for less than back home?

The price of a facelift in the United States is about $9,000. In the Dominican Republic the price is about $4700—a savings of almost 50%. Today’s advanced facelift surgery yields a no-stretch look to prevent that silly facial expression people get several years later. The Dominican Republic is the near-home destination for affordable cosmetic surgery.

For information about available surgeons, email info@sodocipre.net or call 809-682-5808l.

In the United States where a three unit bridge (2 crowns and one pontic) can cost between $4500 and $6000, in the Dominican Republic it can be $900-$2000. For implants, including crown, in the States it will range from $3000 to $6000, in the DR, the range is $1500 to $2700, less expensive per tooth for several implants. In the DR, upper and lower dentures are about $1500, depending on the work.

The north coast is the most naturally lush shore of the Dominican Republic. If you are having medical treatment and also want stay where it is pretty, this is the spot. In its principle city, Puerto Plata, is the Joaquin Lopez Marcos dental clinic of four dentists. You can email them at info@dentallo.com or call at 809-261-6776 for pricing information.

There is a great range of activities to do and sights to see on the north coast, from astounding history— La Isabella, the first permanent European settlement in the New World— to astounding nature— the Bay of Samana, where whales come to calf and breed from February to April every year. And in between there is everything you possibly want to do in a tropical vacation including, but not limited to, water sports like fishing, SCUPA, snorkeling, kite surfing and sailing, in addition there are land sports like horseback riding, caving, rappelling, dirt biking. There are a greater variety of activities here than any similar destination in the Western Hemisphere.

While recovering from surgery, you also have the opportunity to visit remarkable values in affordable property in the Dominican Republic. Farm land is getting increasing attention in the U.S., Canada and worldwide as a hedge against economic collapse. For one reason, you can grow your own food, and healthy, if it is an organic farm. Such a farm can be seen at this site: http://www.selectcaribbean.com/properties/271.html.

A long, gated driveway leads to the main, three-story house. The kitchen has restaurant-quality cooking equipment and granite counter tops. The second floor has two master suites and an office. The third level is an airy, breeze-swept, grand salon.

Cabarete – Surfing Capital of the Caribbean

Cabarete, with its 14 miles of coast on the north shore of the Dominican Republic, has been the surfing capital of the Caribbean for 25 years. It started with windsurfing and grew to include kiteboarding and traditional surfing.

File 1 aerial view of Cabarete beaches Credit ActiveCabarete.com 1024x505 Cabarete Surfing Capital of the Caribbean

It is one of the places in the world to hold important international and national championships like: The Kiteboarding World Tour, Master of the Ocean (the only water sports triathlon in the world), Kiteboarding 4 Kids, The Summer Fest, The Butterfly Effect (a celebration of women in water sports), Pablito Guzman’s Cabarete Classic, the Masters’ Surf Reunion, and The Midwinter Laser Regatta. Good stuff, responsibly done.

kitesurfing l credit active Avbareete cabarete revised 300x199 Cabarete Surfing Capital of the CaribbeanTwo natural wind factors make Cabarete ideal for traditional surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding: a low-wind morning, excellent for teaching windsurfing and excellent for traditional surfing, and an easterly wind that picks up around noon due to thermal currents.

The kiteboarding and windsurfing take place in Cabarete Bay. In order not to have collisions caused by different sailing styles, the two groups divided the bay into two sections. The one for kite surfing to the west of the main part of the bay became known as Kite Beach, which, because of the largely greater popularity of kite surfing, has become the greater part of the bay and extends for about two miles to the west. On a busy day, it can have as many as three hundred kite surfers skipping across the chop of the waves.

El Encuentro Surf Camp Cabarete Dominican Republic encunetro beach 300x201 Cabarete Surfing Capital of the CaribbeanThe shape of shoreline changes along any coast. At the western end of Cabarete is a section of coast called Encuentro Bay. This has a slow-rise bottom that creates wave breaks perfect for traditional surf boarding.

Though a reef breaks down the waves along most of the Cabarete coast, at Encuentro the shore is open to the sea. In the calm mornings waves roll in steadily and smoothly, ideal for surfing. When the wind picks up around noon and the waves get choppy, the surfing ends, and many go kiteboarding. So surfing of some sort is an all-day sport.

But there is more. Cabarete is not just salt-water sports, it is also fresh-water sports. And Cabarete is about choice—more water choice than you get at any other surfing destination in the Caribbean.

Fresh-water sports include white water rafting, canoeing, underwater cave exploration (for the brave of heart), swimming at waterfalls or going down a series of natural water slides.

Cabarete and the north coast of the Dominican Republic have the greatest variety of water sports in the Caribbean basin. They are all offered as tours with guides by such businesses as Iguana Mama, the first licensed adventure tour operator in the Dominican Republic, right here in Cabarete.

The New Samana Highway

The highly anticipated opening of The Dominican Republic’s newest, and perhaps most spectacular, highway has taken place at last! This modern roadway connects all the major tourist centers of the world-famous Samana Peninsula region with the rest of the island nation and with the convenient Samana-Sanchez International airport. From this airport, serviced by European and North American airlines, all of Samana, now lies within an hour and fifteen minutes of a major overseas gateway.

samana highway1 1024x344 The New Samana Highway Known as the Atlantic Boulevard, the highway winds along the north coast from near the International airport through Las Terrenas, El Limon, Samana town, and Las Galeras at the peninsula’s eastern end. But it is not the towns and villages, as lovely as they are, which grasp the eye. Rather, it is the amazing variety of natural beauty which rewards the eye of anyone fortunate enough to drive this wonderful highway.

samana highway pic 300x199 The New Samana Highway

Highway Samana-Santo Domingo

On a trip east along the Atlantic Boulevard, the driver or passenger will experience the mystical beauty of the Los Haitises National Park and spectacular vistas at the Bay of Scotland. Too, the tourist will experience the world’s largest contiguous stand of coconut palms, listed by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site. Indeed, dozens of miles of the once-remote, nearly inaccessible Atlantic coast of the Dominican Republic are now reachable via a modern road complete with safety features as modern as any in the world.

In the months of January, February and March, another treat awaits the traveler along this path. The annual migration of the Atlantic Humpback whales ends at Samana Bay, where females calve and nurture their calves. In the Atlantic, close to shore, bands of Humpbacks, often bachelor males, may be seen feeding close to shore.

Several decades of tourism in the Samana region has finally seen the area reach a kind of maturity. European tourists of French, Italian, British, Spanish and German backgrounds have mixed with Canadians and Americans to create a truly international feel in places like Las Terrenas and Las Galeras. Many artists and craftspeople have mingled with restaurant operators and hoteliers to lend these charming Dominican towns a flavor that should not be missed.

In business in the Dominican Republic

Foreigners to the Dominican republic have contributed much to the overall business community of the country, owning, managing and working with hundreds of companies based both in the country and outside it. This fertile ground offers much to the entrepreneur, whether in the area of a small, local business catering to a local need or in the realm of International trade, manufacturing inside one of the Dominican Republic’s free zones and exporting to the world.

Like in any country, unauthorized foreign persons, i.e., those without permission to work250px Flag of the Dominican Republic.svg In business in the Dominican Republic here, may not seek employment, however upon gaining legal residence, foreigners may seek work in many areas of the local economy, and many opportunities exist in the areas of foreign trade, language instruction and translation, property development, education, medicine, agriculture, construction trades…the list is long.

Additionally, those wishing to create a new business or purchase an existing one will find a climate ripe for many endeavors. The Dominican Republic will provide an employer with reasonably priced labor at all skill-levels and will reward him or her for intelligent decision-making in the pursuit of success. Additionally, regulation is reasonable and vastly more workable than in many highly developed countries.

2049 In business in the Dominican RepublicSuccessful businesses are everywhere in this beautiful island country. Persons wishing a change of lifestyle have come with skills and made a lovely life Sosua and Cabarete, for instance. A European couple with experience in aqua-culture, started a freshwater shrimp farm 20 years ago and now ship all over the country as well as abroad. A Canadian teacher brought his skills and now heads one of the best private schools on the island. An American architect sold his US firm and came to live the dream of designing villas for others, and himself. A German lady, highly educated and realizing that something was missing in her life, came here and, more than a decade ago, started a Dominican Republic real estate company called Select Caribbean Properties…

Our Dominican Republic Horses

Christopher Columbus BR 186x300 Our Dominican Republic HorsesOn Christopher Columbus’ second voyage in 1493, he returned to what is today the Dominican Republic bringing oranges, limes, citron, olive and walnut trees, wheat, rice, cinnamon, cloves, peaches, apricots, sheep, goats, cattle, pigs and . . . horses.

Settlers used these horses in farming, gold mining and mercantile enterprises. Their descendents are today’s Paso Fino, a clever and planned mix of several Spanish breeds. It is the oldest native breed in the Western Hemisphere.

Paso Fino translates as “fine step” in English. Its premier characteristic of a smooth and even gate was inherited from the now-extinct Spanish Jennet. Add to that the genes of the Spanish Barb for hardiness and the Andalusian for a natural presence , and you get a remarkably versatile horse—much like the Morgan, but more so.

smallhorses 300x199 Our Dominican Republic HorsesDo you want a no-bounce ride? Then the Paso Fino is your horse. Its trail gait is a corto, which is comparable to a trot in other horses. Its four-beat lateral gait gives a smooth ride unparalleled by other breeds. Consequently, it can travel at this speed for hours covering distances quickly with no discomfort for the rider or horse as the group of riders in this photograph are doing who are traveling the eight miles of trails through woods and beach at Sea Horse Ranch in Cabarete.

Because of its smooth ride, it is an excellent choice for people with back, neck and arthritic pain. For this very reason I learned to ride a second time on these at the instruction of Daniel Grey at Rancho Lobo Gris in Sosua with my painful lumbar. Daniel has also become well-known for his work with the handicapped with horses at his ranch in Colorado.

In addition to trail riding, the Paso Fino can be trained for other uses. Its compact size, for ease of mounting and dismounting, comes in handy on ranches and bird dog work. The Paso Fino is used at ranches in South America and is prized for its versatility, endurance, beauty and smooth, natural gait.

Buying real estate in Jarabacoa—there will never be a time when you wonder what you will do besides garden and play golf, though the area is excellent for both.

Dominicans call Jarabacoa (the J pronounced as an H) the city of eternal spring. It is the popular destination among the Dominican wealthy class during the summer because of its agreeable weather with annual temperatures ranging from 61 to 72 ° F (16 to 22 ° C). It is also where the Dominican Republic’s eco-tourism started.

Trail up Pico Duarte 150x150 Buying real estate in Jarabacoa

Ferns along Pico Duarte trail

An excellent area to own a vacation, retirement or rental home, it is smack dab in the middle of the country in the Cordillera Central mountain range, called by the locals, the Dominican Alps. The highest is Pico Duarte at 10, 127 feet (3,087 meters), the tallest mountain in the Caribbean and the tallest east of the Mississippi. An adventurous day or two-day trip is trekking the trails to the top. The Dominican Ministry of Environment has even built several lodges along the trail to stop and enjoy the views or to overnight.

A variety of mountain sports in the Jarabacoa area include hang gliding, hiking, dirt biking, canyoning, rappelling, and horseback riding over hill and dale and across streams.

Jarabacoa is a pre-Columbian Taino Indian name that means “land where the water flows,” a direct reference to the 20 rivers and streams that run through the area’s mountainous terrain. The largest are the Baiguate, Jimenoa and the Yaque del Norte replete with waterfalls. The rivers are excellent for white water rafting, canoeing, floating in tubes or panning for gold.

Yup, there is gold in them thar hills. Panning for gold is an adventurous day trip to take visiting family and friends.

Not only is it fun, it gets people outdoors into beautiful scenery. Kids love it, because it gives them a souvenir no one has back at home—gold they caught themselves. Priceless. At the current price of $1800 per ounce, it’s darn near so. Or they can cash it in to buy an iPad.

Three golf courses are nearby. Built among pine groves, the Jarabacoa Golf Club is the only course in the country in the mountains so your game will be distracted by spectacular views.

The Bonao Golf Club was originally built for the executives of a large gold mining company. It was designed by an assistant to Robert Trent Jones, Sr. who designed the Playa Dorada golf course on the north coast.

Las Aromas Santiago Golf Club (The Aromas) is about an hour’s drive to Santiago.
It has beautiful views of the city, Cibao Valley and the Yaque del Norte River. It was designed by Pete Dye during the same period when he built Teeth of the Dog on the south shore.

Jarabacoa’s social life revolves around the Parque Central with its church, casino and restaurants.

For more evening attractions, Santiago, the nation’s second largest city is not far. It has a variety of fine restaurants and the best night life in the country as well as major shopping chains such as PriceSmart.

Nearby La Vega has the most popular carnival on the island. It lasts for many weekends to the end of February on the 27th, when the country celebrates its independence from Haiti in 1844.
