Kiteboarding on the north coast of the Dominican Republic

Cabarete is one of the most popular kiteboarding destinations in the world. Buying real estate along this beautiful bay of Cabarete is the trend!

Kites in the sky Cabarete

Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Cabarete beach offers many options for ocean sports enthusiasts. One of the most popular sports here in the Dominican Republic is kiteboarding and here you will find several schools to choose from, for lessons and rentals alike.

Cabarete is the ideal location for kiteboarding, offering consistent side shore winds and consistent waves. In fact, it is one of the most popular kiteboarding destinations in the world. On a windy day, you will see a sky full of colorful kites hovering above the water, kiteboarders jumping and twisting in the air or surfing at high speeds across the turquoise waters.

Cabarete beach is a paradise for those who love the sea and warm waters of the Caribbean. There are many options for those looking to rent or purchase a condominium or home near the water, making it convenient to take advantage of the many activities and sports available.

Making your way west on Cabarete beach you will find several excellent kitesurfing schools. Here is my favorite and learn about other schools as well.

Kiteboarding in Cabarete – Dominican Republic

Special kiteboarding trips to a beach called Buen Hombre are offered by this amazing group of kites. Buen hombre is a wonderful unspoiled fisherman town west of Puerto Plata, and 35 km away from Monte Cristi, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

Many of the schools are managed by foreigners who have come to the Dominican Republic to find a relaxed lifestyle, either renting or purchasing a beautiful home when they settle here.

There are some other kiteboarding spots on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. You can, for instance, go to Playa Bergantine which is located between Sosua and Puerto Plata. However, one of the best kitesurfing spots on the north coast of the Dominican Republic is most certainly Buen Hombre. A 3-hour drive from Cabarete, this quaint little fishing town boasts some of the best beaches around. With frequent windy days at around 30 knots, flat and crystal clear waters await you. But don’t take our word for it, just look at the pictures below to get an idea of what it’s like.

Here’s Why Sosua and Cabarete are the Jewels of the Dominican Republic

Sosua & Cabarete are more than just towns on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. They are filled with an allure that continues to entice visitors and residents from around the globe.

People may first choose to visit Sosua and Cabarete for the weather or the promise of an adventure. However, they soon realize that there is so much more to experience.

In fact, there’s something for everyone. From water sports and outdoor adventures to lazy afternoons in the shade of a palm tree, you can find it here. From quiet nights into dinner parties and dancing until dawn, the options are numerous.

The natural beauty and rhythm of the north coast are found in the people that visit and live here. This is a place like no other.

In fact, this video seems to capture that spirit of adventure in a unique way. Many people come here thinking they will find something new to discover in the world, and they do. However, many of them discover that there is always more to experience and enjoy that is waiting just around the corner.

Why not discover it for yourself?

At Select Caribbean, we welcome the chance to introduce others to our world here in Sosua and Cabarete. We live here and we love it! We also love to share this place with others and welcome you to our community of excitement and wonder.

Whether you are seeking the vacation of a lifetime or a new place to call home, we want to help make your dreams a reality, right here.

Cabarete – Surfing Capital of the Caribbean

Cabarete – Surfing Capital for 25 years with its 14 miles of coast on the north shore of the Dominican Republic is the number 1 destination.

Cabarete – Surfing Capital of the Caribbean. It started with windsurfing and grew to include kiteboarding and traditional surfing.

Ocean Point 1 Aerial

It is one of the places in the world to hold important international and national championships like: The Kiteboarding World Tour, Master of the Ocean (the only water sports triathlon in the world), Kiteboarding 4 Kids, The Summer Fest, The Butterfly Effect (a celebration of women in water sports), Pablito Guzman’s Cabarete Classic, the Masters’ Surf Reunion, and The Midwinter Laser Regatta. Good stuff, responsibly done.

Two natural wind factors make Cabarete ideal for traditional surfing, Windsurfing, and Kiteboarding: a low-wind morning, excellent for teaching windsurfing and excellent for traditional surfing, and an easterly wind that picks up around noon due to thermal currents.

The kiteboarding and windsurfing take place in Cabarete Bay. In order not to have collisions caused by different sailing styles, the two groups divided the bay into two sections. The one for kitesurfing to the west of the main part of the bay became Kite Beach, because of the largely greater popularity of kiteboarding. On a busy day, it can have as many as three hundred kitesurfers skipping across the chop of the waves.

The shape of shoreline changes along any coast. At the western end of Cabarete is a section of coast called Encuentro Bay. This has a low-rise bottom that creates wave breaks perfect for traditional kiteboarding.

Though a reef breaks down the waves along most of the Cabarete coast, at Encuentro the shore is open to the sea. In the calm mornings, waves roll in steadily and smoothly, ideal for surfing. When the wind picks up around noon and the waves get choppy, the surfing ends, and many go kiteboarding. So surfing of some sort is an all-day sport.

But there is more. Cabarete is not just salt-water sports, it is also fresh-water sports. And Cabarete is about choice—more water choice than you get at any other Surfing destination in the Caribbean.

Fresh-water sports include white water rafting, canoeing, underwater cave exploration (for the brave of heart), swimming at waterfalls or going down a series of natural water slides.

Cabarete and the north coast of the Dominican Republic have the greatest variety of water sports in the Caribbean basin. They are all offered as tours with guides by such businesses as Iguana Mama, the first licensed adventure tour operator in the Dominican Republic, right here in Cabarete.

A Freelancer’s Perspective on Working and Living in Cabarete

Kristina Paider

Cabarete Freelance Writer

Meet Kristina Paider, a Cabarete freelance researcher, writer, and editor based out of this famous surf town in the Dominican Republic.

Originally from Wisconsin, Kristina, a Cabarete freelance writer, has worked and lived in many locations around the globe. We wanted to find out what drew her to Cabarete and how she keeps her work/life balance when living abroad. Her answers might surprise – and encourage – you!

1. What drew you to Cabarete?

I first came to Cabarete to do the “27 Waterfalls” as immersion therapy. After leading a rescue of two drowning boys, I developed panic attacks. I had tried several things (unsuccessfully) to quell them, and in 10 years, nothing had worked. I stayed because of the wonderfully diverse and supportive community of ex-pats, locals, entrepreneurs and water enthusiasts – it felt like home.

2. What do you do?

I’m a writer, researcher, and editor. I help storytellers of all kinds – fiction and non-fiction, personal and business, craft their message to attract and engage a wider audience.

3. What’s a highlight of your life/work balance?

It’s hard to pick just one! It seems that here, time passes at a more relaxed pace, and there is always time for the things I want to do. Specifically, I love the mornings when I walk and swim with a friend from my writing group. Not only is it efficiently working multiple muscle groups, but we also get our brains in gear and problem-solve the next move in whatever material we’re working on.

Plus, we are in Cabarete Bay and use an infinity pool overlooking the ocean. We usually end up laughing hysterically at something – or everything. It’s hard to beat that. These are the most productive hours of my week.

4. What’s one or two tips you have for people seeking to make a move such as yours?

Bring an open mind and a good attitude. Embrace and learn as much about your new surroundings as possible. If you try to re-create everything you had exactly as you had it at home, a move like this will be frustrating.

However, if you can embrace new things and entertain your curiosity, it could be the time of your life.

Also, you can do a gut-check with this question: “What would I regret more: DOING it, or NOT DOING it?” That’s usually a good barometer.

Cabarete’s Unique Sailing Venue

The charming seaside resort town of Cabarete has become a unique world-class sailing venue in recent years.

The north coast of the Dominican Republic sits right in a zone of constant breezes known as the Northeast Tradewinds. These winds are steady and constant, particularly in the Bay of Cabarete. Because of the way the sea and land affect each other, wind strength varies during a typical day. In the morning, winds are usually light while afternoons bring stronger winds. This is due to warm air rising over the island as afternoons progress, pulling in cool ocean air to replace it. The warmer the day, the more likely winds will strengthen in the afternoon.

Some years ago, an Internationally-ranked Laser sailor started the Cabarete Laser Training Center. Located right on the beach, the facility offers sales and rentals of various watercraft and forms a base for local and visiting sailors who want to sail in the challenging waters of Cabarete Bay. Throughout the year, the Training Center offers sail training to various levels of racing sailors. The advanced clinics feature some former and current Olympic competitors as coaches or participants. Each January, the Caribbean Midwinter Regatta, a unique sailing venue, attracts Laser sailors from all over the world for a week of clinics and racing in beautiful Cabarete.

Children sailing, Cabarete Bay

There are more than a dozen Lasers at the Training center, some privately owned and some available for rental or lessons. In addition, there are Hobie Catamarans and a few larger day sailing boats available for rental and instruction. A recent addition to the Cabarete sailing scene is the Children’s Sailing Program. Sailed in Optimists, the international youth training boat, the program alternates between Cabarete on calm days and the nearby River Yasica where the kids can enjoy good breezes and flat water. There are currently 16 kids between 7 and 13 participating in this popular, fun program with a waiting list of a dozen. More clinics are planned in the near future, including beginning youth racing

Sailing is many things to many people. We have in Cabarete every kind of sailor imaginable. They sail all kinds of wind-powered craft from Kiteboards to windsurfers to traditional sailboats. We have world champions and circumnavigators. We also have those fortunate people who sail for the pure joy of being close to nature.

Recently, a Cabarete man was sailing just outside the barrier reef near Cabarete. He was enjoying the company of two good friends who were visiting from Maine. The wind was light and the day bright and sparkling. And if that were not enough, a 45-foot humpback whale surfaced near their boat.  She had a young calf, born just a couple of months before, and was teaching her baby how to handle the waves of the open ocean. After a magical 10 minutes, the sailboat and the whales parted company with the sailboat returning to its home at the Laser Training Center while the whales headed off north to distant New England.
